Lissa had been fed a lot of lines in her time. Lines from guys who wanted in her pants. ones from people who wished to use her to get closer to Brad. But this one, this, was something completely off the charts, fucking insane, new. At least for her.

She’d not lied when she said she’d heard of shifters, she had. And the fact they had mates. One for the entire life. Nice sentiment and all but again, urban legend in her mind.

Not so much a legend anymore. If he was telling the truth.

And she may be completely wrong here, but as far as she knew he’d not lied to her yet. I mean why would a man who admitted to killing her father chose to lie about something else. If anything, he should have lied about taking her old man’s life.

Her greedy mind and lady bits latched onto the pleasure bit he’d mentioned. She had no doubt the man could lay it down. He had that look.

She wasn’t as on board with the declaration of love because shit like that happened in romance novels, not her life.

“Say something.” He held her gaze.

In the backs of his eyes, she noticed a hint of concern, but she wasn’t sure why. Perhaps that was different in the shifter world. She had heard about his kind and the sex that happened with them. Stories of how good of lovers they were to how they were mindless killers who would eat their own mother if it came down to only one of them being able to live.

She racked her brain trying to think of what happened now, but in truth, she wanted to step closer to him and let him do as he’d claimed. Protect her.

“Not sure what to say. I don’t know what I should even be thinking. I hate you on pure grounds that you were the one who killed my father and put me in the foster system. Yet, if that hadn’t happened, I wouldn’t have met Brad and found my way to working on a pit crew, loving my job and my life. I’m torn.”

And she was. She didn’t live under a rock and she knew how things worked in the military. He couldn’t disobey orders. They were given by someone higher up. He was the scalpel that was wielded.

“Why did you kill him? I mean, I know it was an order, but why was it given?”

The corners of his mouth pinched, and her belly clenched.

“Don’t lie to me.”

“I cannot. I just do not believe it wise to continue this conversation here.”

“Is someone watching us?” She looked toward the lake.

“Perhaps. We should go.” He released her and she missed his touch immediately. “Will you come with me to my hotel?”

“Not if you’re in the same one I’m in. I don’t need him coming to my room.”

“I’ll get a new room. Let’s go.”

It didn’t register to her what he’d said until they pulled up before one of the swankiest hotel’s she’d seen in Charlotte and got them a room.
